Chimney Rock is at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. I love seeing the full moon in the sky when it isn't yet dark or early, early in the morning before it descends below the horizon.
I have often gone to the Four Corners at this time of year. It is a cold, clear, quiet refuge where I understand I am a speck in the Universe, if that. I love the wide open sky, and land that reveals surprises slowly only after much careful, patient looking. I love having 360 degrees of horizon below my feet, so different from the verdant green valley in which I live.
Do you remember the day or two immediately after 9-11 when there were no sonic booms and no jet trails. I was so surprised by the silence and by realizing how inured I had become to the noise and the white lines drawn in the blue sky. It's a presence of absence that I encounter there.
